Hazrat Usman was born in the Quraish family of the Umayyad tribe. He belonged to a rich merchant family of Makkah. He was a learned person. Even before accepting Islam, he led a pious life. He was the first Umayyad to become a Muslim.
His family was very much against his conversion to Islam.
His uncle punished him severely, but he did not give up his faith. To avoid persecution he and his wife migrated to Abyssinia with other Muslims. After a few years, they came back to Makkah from where they again migrated to Madinah. Thus, he was one of those who undertook two migrations for the sake of Islam. Hazrat Usman(razi Allah tala anha) served Islam faithfully and helped Muslims in many ways. He spent 20,000 dirhams to purchase a well for the Muslims.
When the Holy Prophet(sal, lal,la,ho,alai,he,wasalam) wanted to purchase a piece of land for the extension of the mosque, Hazrat Usman(razi Allah tala anha) bought it with his own money. During the Tabuk Expedition, he donated 10,000 dirhams and one thousand camels. At the time of the Treaty of Hudaibiya, he was sent by the Holy Prophet(sal, lal,la,ho,alai,he,wasalam)” to negotiate with the unbelievers.
For his generosity, he was given the title of Ghani by the Holy Prophet(sla, lal,la,ho alai,he wasalam). He was also known as Zun Nurain because he had married two daughters of the Holy Prophet(sal, lal,la,ho,alai,he,wasalam), one after another. The first two Khalifas, Hazrat Abu Bakr(razi Allah tala anha) and Hazrat Usman(razi Allah tala anha), used to seek his advice in all matters of the state. On his death bed, Hazrat Umar(razi Allah tala anha) nominated six people, for the next Khalifa.
The choice of Muslims was Hazrat Usman(razi Allah tala anha), who became the third Khalifa. The first few years of his Khilafat were very peaceful but the last four years were full of revolts. Some of the people who did not want him to be the Khalifa asked him to abdicate. On his refusal, they entered his house and killed him while he was reading the Holy Quran. He was buried in Jannat-ul-Baqi in Madinah.
