By a Muslim Scholar, for the Muslim Ummah

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem
Alhamdulillahi Rabbil ‘Alamin. Was-salatu was-salamu ‘ala Sayyidina Muhammad, wa ‘ala aalihi wa sahbihi ajma’een.

Respected brothers and sisters in Islam,
Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

Today, I stand before you to speak about one of the most remarkable women in the history of Islam. A woman who holds a unique and honored position in the heart of our beloved Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. A woman of intelligence, integrity, modesty, and deep faith. I speak of none other than Sayyidah Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (razi allah tala anhu).

Let us today remind ourselves of her noble character, her unwavering support for Islam, and her eternal place in the hearts of all believers. Let this speech be a means of love, admiration, and emulation.

🌹 Her Noble Lineage and Early Life

Sayyidah Khadija razi allah tala anhu was born into a noble and respected family of the Quraysh tribe in Makkah. Her father, Khuwaylid ibn Asad , was a wealthy and honorable merchant. Her upbringing was in an environment of dignity and wealth, but Khadija razi allah tala anhu anhu was never arrogant or boastful. She was known even before Islam as “At-Tahira” – The Pure One.

She was married twice before the Holy Prophet ﷺ, and after the death of her second husband, she became a wealthy widow. Despite her wealth, she lived modestly and with great care for the poor and needy. She was admired across Makkah for her intelligence, business acumen, and upright moral character.

🕋 Her Marriage to the Holy Prophet ﷺ

One of the most beautiful chapters of her life begins with her marriage to Rasulullah ﷺ .

Khadijah (razi allah tala anhu) was a successful businesswoman. She would send goods to be traded in Syria and Yemen and employed honest men to conduct her business. Upon hearing of the truthfulness and trustworthiness of Muhammad ibn Abdullah ﷺ , she appointed him to manage her trade.

Upon his return from the business trip to Syria, her servant Maysarah reported to her the noble character, honesty, and miraculous events surrounding Prophet Muhammad ﷺ during the journey. Maysarah witnessed how clouds shaded him from the sun, and how monks recognized him as the awaited prophet.

Deeply impressed, khadija razi allah tala anhu proposed marriage to the Holy Prophet ﷺ. He accepted. At the time, he was 25 years old and she was 40.

My dear brothers and sisters, this was no ordinary marriage. This was a union based on mutual respect, honesty, and shared values. She was his first wife , and during her lifetime, he married no other woman . This alone shows the depth of his love and loyalty to her.

🕯️ Her Role in the Early Days of Islam

When the Holy Prophet ﷺ received the first revelation in the cave of Hira, he returned home trembling and anxious. Who was the first to comfort him? Who was the first to believe in him? It was Sayyidah khadija (razi allah tala anhu).

She wrapped him in a cloak, soothed him with gentle words, and said:

“By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you. You maintain ties with your kin, you help the poor, you serve your guests generously, and you assist those in need.”

She took him to Waraqah ibn Nawfal , her cousin, a Christian scholar who confirmed that Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was indeed the final Holy Prophet foretold in earlier scriptures.

My beloved Ummah, remember this:
Khadijah (razi allah tala anhu) was the first person to believe in Islam . Before Abu Bakr razi allah tala anh, before Ali, before any of the Sahaba—there was Khadijah. She is Ummul Mu’mineen – the Mother of the Believers.

She gave everything— her wealth, her home, her comfort —to support the mission of Rasulullah ﷺ. During the boycott of the Muslims by the Quraysh in the valley of Shi’b Abi Talib, she endured hunger and hardship for three long years , side by side with the Holy Prophet ﷺ.

🕊️ Her Passing and the Year of Sorrow

Sayyidah Khadijah (razi allah tala anhu) passed away at the age of 65, in the 10th year of Prophethood. Her death caused the Holy Prophet ﷺ immense grief . That year also saw the death of his beloved uncle Abu Talib. It became known as “Aam al-Huzn – the Year of Sorrow.”

The Holy Prophet ﷺ would later say:

“She believed in me when no one else did. She accepted Islam when people rejected me. And she supported me with her wealth when no one else would.”

Even years after her passing, he ﷺ would honor her memory. He would mention her with love, send gifts to her friends, and speak of her virtues often. Once, when Aisha (razi allah tala anhu) expressed jealousy about Khadijah, the Holy Prophet ﷺ replied:

“She believed in me when others disbelieved. Allah blessed me with her love.”

SubhanAllah! Such was her impact.

❓ Common Public Questions

Q: Is it wrong for a woman to be successful in business like Khadijah (razi allah tala anhu)?
Absolutely not. Khadijah (razi allah tala anhu) proves that a woman can be both successful in business and a devoted wife and mother. Islam encourages honest trade, and there is no shame in Muslim women working , as long as modesty and Islamic values are maintained.

Q: Why do we speak about her so often, even centuries later?
Because her faith, sacrifice, and character are timeless examples. She stood by the Holy Prophet ﷺ in the most critical phase of Islam. Loving her is part of loving the Holy Prophet ﷺ.

Q: Was her marriage to a younger man unusual or discouraged?
Not at all. The Holy Prophet ﷺ was younger, but their bond was strong. Islam teaches us to look at character and piety , not just age or status. Their marriage was based on mutual admiration and deep love.
